Sirs:

  I have the honor to indorse herewith the request of our Committee on Science (Lupon sa Agham) for the sum of P1,500.00 for the mimeographing of the pre-publication edition of their “English-Pilipino Integrated Science Vocabulary.”

  The pre-publication edition of the Vocabulary will consist of about 200 mimeographed letter-size pages containing about 6000 terms in all the principal fields of science and technology.

  The Committee on Science was created by the Akademya ng Wikang Pilipino on May 24, 1964 and it undertook the science vocabulary project in Pilipino in line with the following UNESCO policies:

  1. “Member nations of UNESCO are invited to work on the preparation of scientific bibliographies and the standardization of terminology in their national languages.” (Paragraph 2.131 of the 12C Resolutions)
  2. “Resolved, to endorse Working Paper No. 4BC/NS/WP/7… proposing a scientific documentation and information project in the Philippine National Language.” (Resolution No. 4 of the Commission on Natural Sciences, 4th UNESCO Philippines Biennial Conference, 1963. Copy attached.)

  Your records will show that the Akademya itself was established in the early part of 1964 as a result of the above UNESCO policies.

  For more detailed explanations on the guiding principles an objectives of this project, we refer you to the paper “An Easier Method of Teaching Science” written by Mr. Gonzalo del Rosario, Member of the Akademya and chairman of the Research sub-committee of the Lupon sa Agham. This paper appeared in the June–July 1966 issue of your “UNESCO PHILIPPINES.” (Copy attached).

  With our Committee on Science, I believe that an English-Pilipino technical vocabulary such as they have prepared will help considerably in the teaching of science to elementary school children; furthermore, the vocabulary will also be of great help to Filipinos learning science in English because the Pilipino terms, being often descriptive, will give them greater insight into English scientific and technical words. We, therefore, recommend approval of their request.
